tom sells chocolate bars for 1.00 and bags of jellybeans for 1.25, he sells 40 bags of jellybeans and collects 70.00, how many chocolate bars does he sell?

ASVAB key says answer is 24. 1.25x 40=50, 50 +x =70, X=20?

It seems like a portion of the problem has been omitted.

Ok, now it makes sense. It is very difficult to read the problem as it is typed.

Their solution has to be wrong...It says,  40 + 1.25x=70
                                                              1.25x= 30
                                                                     x=24
Why did they get this answer? Thank you for your time...Eric

Units are extremely important in this type of problem. The basic relationship is:
             (dollars per item)*(number of items) = dollars

So,
        Total dollars for chocolate         +        total dollars for jellybeans     =   $70
        ($1 per bar)*(x bars)               + ($1.25 per bag)*(40 bags)           =   $70
               x + 50 = 70             [multiply; then, divide all by $]
                  x = 20

Confidence is built by checking the answer:
     Is        ($1 per bar)(20 bars) + ($1.25 per bag)*(40 bags) = $70    ?
                              $20 + $50 = $70    ?
                                  $70 = $70    ?yes

Now, to analyze the question and the answer key, try this simple change (could easily be typo):
"Tom sells chocolate bars for $1.00 and bags of jellybeans for $1.25. He sells 40 chocolate bars and collects a total of $70.00. How many bags of jelly beans did he sell?"
