To do this we are going to factor the given function on the left side. This is done through educated guessing and deductive reasoning.
A. We know that the 2 is negative, so our factors are either 1 and -2 or -1 and 2. Because these are so close together and the single degree value is at negative 3, we should factor 9x2 into two 3x values. Next we should try to figure out how they pair up.
(3x )(3x )=0 is what we are sure of. So first we should try 1 and -2 since the single degree is negative.
(3x-2)(3x+1)=0 If we factor it out we get 9x2+3x-6x-2=0, which is 9x2-3x-2=0. It matches!
Now that we found our factors, we solve each one individually for zero. This is because any number times 0 is still 0, proof of our solution.
3x-2=0 → 3x=2 → x=2/3
3x+1=0 → 3x=-1→ x= -1/3
Those are you two answers. You can double check by plugging either into the original function to check your work.
