"The difference of" tells us there will be 2 expressions to subtract.
The first expression is "the product of number, y, and 3," that is, y times 3. Write it as 3y.
The second expression is 24.
"Is" means "equals."
So we have:
3y - 24 = 237
To solve by getting the variable by itself, add 24 to both sides: 3y = 261
Then divide by 3: y = 87
