asked 05/31/17How is federalism portrayed in the movies and television shows you’ve seen? Why do you think it is portrayed that way?

In any film with conflict between persons representing the different levels of government, that is a great way to see federalism at work. Many crime dramas involving activity by the FBI feature local or state law enforcement wrestling with how much authority "the feds" have in superseding their own constitutionally authorized duties. One major motion picture that comes to mind is Mississippi Burning (1988), a dramatization (an overly wrought one in many reviewers opinion) of an investigation into the murders of civil rights workers in 1964. While it may be considered controversial in its treatment of the subject matter, there was a great deal of interaction between law enforcement personnel, again regarding the extent of each one's constitutionally authorized duties and each one's interpretation of those duties. These portrayals are an excellent way not only to think deeply about the meaning of federalism but also to profoundly grasp how much US citizens value the distinctions between each level of government as the preeminent check against tyranny.
