A homogenous mixture is when everything in the mixture is completely in solution, such as when you add salt or sugar to water. The solution will appear completely clear, regardless of color.
A heterogeneous mixture is when the mixture is not fully dissolved, such as when you add sand or oil to water. This mixture will appear cloudy amd settle, or will separate into layers.
An undissolved mixture of a solid and a liquid is called a suspension. An undissolved mixture of two liquids is called an emulsion.
