The following day Cory returned to the store to purchase some more socks. He had $50 to spend. When he arrived at the store, the shoes were on sale for 1/3 off. What is the greatest amount of pairs of socks Coty can purchase if he purchases another pair of shoes in addition to the socks?

 

IMPORTANT INFO:

Shoes are $48.99 each (without the 1/3 off), and socks are $2.50 each.

If the shoes are $48.99 originally, but are now 1/3 off, you will pay 2/3 of the original price.

2/3 * $48.99 = $32.66.

In order to determine how much you have left to spend on socks, subtract 32.66 from 50.

$50.00 - $32.66 = $17.34

In order to determine how many socks you can buy, divide $17.34 by the price of one pair of socks, $2.50.

$17.34 / $2.50 = 6.936

You can buy 6 pairs of socks ($15 total cost) and 1 pair of shoes with your $50.

(Note of importance, you could NOT buy 7 pairs of socks ($17.50 total cost) because you don't have enough money!)
