Divide 1870 into three parts in such a way that half of first part, one -third of second part and one-sixth of the third part all are equal?

Let x, y, and z be the three parts, such that x + y + z = 1870.  We also know that x/2 = y/3 = z/6.  Let's do some substitutions:

 

     x/2 = y/3

     3x/2 = y

 

     x/2 = z/6

     6x/2 = z

 

Now substitute 3x/2 in place of y and 6x/2 in place of z:

 

     x + y + z = 1870

     x + 3x/2 + 6x/2 = 1870

     11x/2 = 1870

 

Solve for x.  Once you have x, y = 3x/2 and z = 3x.  Check your answer by adding x + y + z to be sure they sum to 1870.
