kevin cuts lawns for $20, gavin cuts lawns for $18. together they made $414. gavin made $54 more dollars than kevin. How many lawns did each person cut? math word problem

Hi Jenn, let k represent the number of lawns Kevin cut. Let g represent the number of lawns Gavin cut. Then:

 

20k + 18g = 414, total money

 

And

 

-20k + 18g = 54, difference in money earned

 

System of equations:

 

  20k  +  18g  = 414

 -20k  +  18g  =   54

-----------------------

              36g  = 468

 

g = 13

 

Substitute for g in the first equation to find out how many lawns Kevin cut:

 

20k  + 18 * 13 = 414

 

20k  = 180

 

k = 9

 

Kevin cut 9 lawns and Gavin cut 13 lawns.
