I believe the resistance to stem cell application primarily arose from the sourcing of stem cells. There has been debate over the ethics of using embryonic stem cells and whether the government should be funding embryonic stem cell research. The alternatives to embryonic stem cells would be adult stem cells, amniotic stem cells, and pluripotent stem cells via induction.
