What number should be added to -76 to get a sum of 61?

x + (-76) = 61                   

x = 61 + 76

x= 137

Hi Akeda, if you look at the two numbers on the number line, -76 is to the left of 0, while 61 is to the right of 0.

 

In order to to find out what number to add to -72 to get 61, do this:

 

To move from -72 to 0, you need to add 72. 

 

To move from 0 to 61, you need to add 61.

 

The total added to get from -72 to 61 is: 72 + 61, or 133.
