Percent decrease

Four feet are cut from a 12-foot board. What is the percent decrease in length? I got 66.6% but the answer is 33.3%...why is that??

The decrease is 4 ft; compared to the original (base) value of 12 ft, that's a 4/12 = 1/3 = 33.33% decrease.

So you wouldn't use the % of change formula for this problem because  I did 12-4/12=8/12=66.6%

Read my answer carefully.  Your 66.6% is the percentage of the original that remains.
