foil method solve for x

(X + 1)(a - 4) = y -2   Solve the equation for X
 
Do i do foil method so then I end up with 
 
ax - 4x + a - 5 = y -2 (?) 
 
Or am I off? How do I break this down to solve for x ?

kinda getting there. Why, at the end, do you flip the + and - signs? Why isn't the answer
 
x = (Y + 2)

Technically, the way you wrote it is also correct, but the standard format would have the positive or negative designation at the front. For example, negative one half would be written with the negative in front of the normal 1 over 2, not as a 1 over a -2.
