x = age
√x + x/2 - 12 = 0
Substitution: u = √x
u + u2/2 - 12 = 0
u2 + 2u - 24 = 0
(u + 6)(u - 4) = 0
u = -6 or 4
u = √x ⇒ x = u2 = 36 or 16
Since he is a boy, pick 16 as the correct answer.

The mathematical steps in the answer are correct, and the reasoning is logical. The answer is correct. A boy is not 36 years old. You are just being argumentative.

but a 16 year old boy is not going to reply in such a way to such a simple question. the only place it is answered in such a way is when a student asks a 36 year old what his age is, and the 36 year old decides to put the student's math skills to the test. No 16 year old will answer like that. That 36 year old is a child at heart. thus, he was referred to as a boy. therefore the answer is 36 years.04/24/20
