Set up a proportion:

22 58.52

---- = ------

100 x

That is, the ratio of 22% to 100% is the same as the ratio of 58.52 to x. Here x is the number we are trying to find. Hence:

22x = (58.52)(100)

Now solve for x. Let me know what you get in the comments

Because this is business math, I'm suspecting you are learning this using base, rate, part, and not using algebra. (Proportions work well too if you're learning that.) If you're actually using algebra in that class, you can ignore me as it's just a different approach.

Remember that P = B x R

So say I had 10 apples and gave away 3 and that's 30%.

i.e. 3 is 30% of 10.

So the base is the "original" number; it's the "of." The part is generally some portion of that base (and usually a smaller number but it can be bigger if you have an increase problem).

P = B x R

We can rewrite that as:

B = P/R

R = P/B

So solving for the B or R is a division, and the P *always* goes first or on top.

Your problem is asking for the base. 58.52 is 22% OF what number? That's asking for base.

So B = P/R

B = 58.52 / .22

Another approach:

(58.52)(is)(22%)(of)(what number?)

58.52 = (22/100) * x; [Where * means multiply.]

Multiply both sides by 100/22:

5852/22 = x

x = 2926/11 = 266

Can you do this problem without a calculator? You should.

Two people answered this question already. Was there a need for a third answer? You answer did not add anything that was not already answered. What gives with you?

I showed the translation from English to the math language. No one else did.

I showed the definition of percent. No one else did.

I showed how to do the calculation with mental math. No one else did.

I challenged the student to do the problem with their own unaided mind. No one else did.

I showed a unique SOLUTION, different from the others. Solution processes are what matter, not answers.

Why are you so territorial? What are you trying to protect? Are you afraid of solution comparisons?

58.52 is 22% of what number'

This can be rewritten as;

58.52 = 22% × 'Y' .....................Y is the unknown number.

remember 22% = 22/100 => 0.22

so;

58.52 = 0.22Y

solve for Y by dividing both sides by 0.22

58.52 / 0.22 = Y

Different people have different approaches to a problem. You gave your method. Good Job! everyone one else has their own approach so let it be and hush. Its all aimed at presenting the student with a simple and understood approach and not who answers it first. Thanks

Hi Jessica;

22%=0.22

x=number

0.22x=58.52

Divide both sides by 0.22

(0.22x)/0.22=58.52/0.22

Let's check our work...

266(0.22)=58.52
