Space Shuttle Endeavor is launched to an altitude of 500 KM above the surface of the earth. The shuttle travels at speed of 700 m/s. How long will it take to reach its orbit?

Answer 1

The Space Shuttle does not climb to orbit in a straight vertical line.  It enters orbit along a curved trajectory.  However,  I assume they want you to work this problem as if it did climb straight up.  In that case,

 

time = distance / speed

 

time = (500,000 m) / (700 m/s) ≅ 714 s
