the initial cost is an independent value, nothing affects it so it stands on it's own in an equation. Following that, the cost depends on how many months you have the service for. $30 for one month = $30/month so if you multiply this rate by the number of months, which is our unknown independent variable (x) since it only depends on the value it is given, not on any calculation, we get the price for that amount of time. Then, you add the initial cost of the phone for the total spent, your dependent value(y), since it depends on the number of months.
Meaning:
y=30x +150
