The sum of two numbers is 24. twice the larger number is 24 more than the smaller number. What are the two numbers?

Let's call the smaller number x, then the larger number is 24-x

2*(24-x) = x+24 (we are given this in the question)

48-2x = x+24

24 = 3x

x = 8

24-8=16

The numbers are 8 and 16.

Let X be the smaller number and Y be the larger number.

 

X + Y = 24

2Y = X + 24 or Y = x/2 + 12

 

X + X/2 + 12 = 24 or 1.5X = 12 or X = 8 and Y = 16.

 

The larger number is 16 and the smaller number is 8.
