f(1/4) = -5(1/4)^2 - 7(1/4) - 7                 [use x = 1/4]

f(1/4) = -5(1/16) - 7/4 - 7                     [(1/4)^2 = 1/16]

f(1/4) = -7 - 5/16 - 28/16                      [re-order terms; 7/4 = 28/16]

f(1/4) = -7 - 33/16

f(1/4) - -9 1/16                    [because 33/16 = 2 1/16]

1/4  x 1/4 = 1/8

 

-5 x 1/8 = -5/8

 

-7 x 1/4 = -7/4 = -14/ 8

 

-7 = -56/ 8

 

so -5/8 -14/8- 56/8 = -75/8

 

simplify = -9 3/8
