Hi Noran, let s represent a student ticket and g represent a guest ticket. Set up two equations and solve.
Equation 1, number of tickets sold:
s + g = 290
Equation 2, cost of tickets sold:
s * 1 + g * 3 = 490
System of equations:
s + g = 290
s + 3g = 490
----------------
To solve by elimination, multiply the first equation by -1:
-s - g = -290
s + 3g = 490
-------------------
2g = 200
g = 100
There were 100 guest tickets sold.
From first equation:
s + 100 = 290
s = 190
There were 190 student tickets sold.
