A child's baton is 0.50 m long, and each end has a mass of 0.15 kg. What is the moment of inertia of the baton if the baton is twirled about the midpoint between the ends? Assume that the rod has a neglectable mass.

If the mass of the rod is negligible, the moment of inertia is the sum of the moments of inertia due to the masses at both ends.

 

I = 2mr² = 2(0.15 kg)(0.50 m / 2)² = 0.01875 kg m²
