The mass of Earth is 5.98x10^24 kg and the mass of the sun is 330,000 times greater than the mass of Earth. If the center of Earth is, on average, 1.495x10^11 m from the center of the Sun, calculate the magnitude of the gravitational force the Sun exerts on Earth.

This problem is a direct application of Newton's universal law of gravitation

 

f = GMm/R²  where M and m are the mass of the two objects, and R is the distance between them. 

 

f =  (6.673 *10^-11( * (5.98 *10²⁴ ) * (330000 * 5.98*10²⁴) /(1.495 * 10¹¹)² = 3.523344*10²² N
