Hi Brandi,
When we're comparing fractions, the first step would be to make them all have the same denominator, or bottom number. So we need to look for the least common multiple, or the smallest number that they have in common, that is not zero.
1 / 2
7 / 8
3 / 4
Looking at the numbers, the smallest bottom number in common would be 8, because 2 * 4 = 8, 8 * 1 = 8, and 4 * 2 = 8. So let's multiply the top and bottom by the same number to get 8 on the bottom.
(1 * 4) / (2 * 4) = 4 / 8
(7 * 1) / (8 * 1) = 7 / 8
(3 * 2) / (4 * 2) = 6 / 8
We can now tell that the heaviest book is the science book, then the history book, and lastly, the math notebook.
Hope this helps!
