By humanism is meant that cultural movement, inspired by Francesco Petrarca and partly by Giovanni Boccaccio, aimed at the rediscovery of the Latin and Greek classics in their memory and no longer in their allegorical interpretation, thus also including the customs and beliefs of antiquity in their daily lives through the so-called "dark ages" of the Middle Ages.
Petrarchist humanism, strongly imbued with Neoplatonism and tending to the knowledge of the human soul, spreads to every area of the peninsula, determining the accentuation of an aspect of classicism according to the needs of the "protectors" of the humanists themselves, that is to say the various rulers.
