As worded, it is FALSE.  There are 2 types of waves, which are longitudinal and transverse.  In longitudinal waves (such as sound waves), the particles vibrate back and forth along the direction of the wave, but they are not pushed away from the source.  In transverse waves (such as electromagnetic waves), the particles vibrate back and forth in a direction perpendicular to the direction of the wave, but they are not pushed away from the source.
