What is the mass, in grams, of each jar of salsa?

Mr. Goff's family loves salsa. She purchases a box that contains 6 jars of salsa. The total mass of the 6 jars is 9 kilograms. What is the mass, in grams, of each jar of salsa?

Do all 6 jars have the same mass?  If so, then the mass of one jar is the total mass of the 6 jars divided by 6.

 

m = 9 kg / 6 = 9000 g / 6 = 1500 g

 

If the jars do not all have the same mass, then you need to provide additional information in order to answer this question.

If the total mass of the six jars is 9 kg, then we can find the mass of each jar in terms of kg. That would be 9/6 = 1 3/6 = 1 1/2 kg for each jar (assuming uniform mass for each jar).

 

Our next step is to convert kg to g. How many grams are in 1 kilogram?

 

1 kg = 1000 g

 

You should now be able to determine how many grams are in 1.5 kg, the mass of each jar of salsa.
