A teacher wants to post a row of student artwork on a wall that is 20 ft long. Some pieces are 8.5 inches wide, other pieces are 11 inches wide. She is going to leave 3 inches of space to the left of each art piece. She wants to post at least 16 pirates of art. Write and graph a system of inequalities that describes how many pieces of each size she can post

Hi Vary,
Let define some variables
X = number of art pieces that are 8.5" wide
Y = number of art pieces that are 11" wide
X+Y ≥ 16 since she wants to post at least 16 pieces of art
11.5X + 14Y ≤ 20(12) or 11.5X + 14Y ≤ 240
Now let me explain the second equation.
11.5 = 8.5 + 3 These pieces are 8.5" wide and you need to add 3" to the left of each piece
14 = 11 + 3 These pieces are 11" wide and you need to add 3" to the left of each piece
20(12) is to convert the 20 feet into inches.
Now graph each line and shade the area, above or below the line which is representative of the inequality.
