Hi Audrey,
The formula for the lateral surface area of a cone is S= pi(r)(s) where s is the slant height. Slant height is given by
s=√(r2+h2) , but that is not pertinent to this problem.
Use S = pi(r)(s); substitute in the values you know and solve for s.
58.7 = pi(5.75/2)(s) --divided the diameter by 2 to get the radius
So,
s= 58.7(2)/5.75(pi) --use a calculator to get the slant height to the nearest 100th of an inch.
