Hello Tess,
To get rid of parentheses, distribute. Start with nested parentheses (parentheses that are inside of other parentheses) and work your way outward.
For example, to get rid of the parentheses around the (2x + 1) term, distribute the -2 in front into the parentheses:
-2(2x + 1) distributes to end up looking like -4x - 2
