Estimation: 330 + 60 = 390, done mentally.  Real (exact) answer = 393; can also be done mentally. Big deal!

I never heard of using "compatible numbers."  Is that just a fancy way of saying "round each number off to the nearest multiple of 10?"  Is this another Common Core way of teaching basic math?
