Area of triangle = 1/2bh, where b= base, h = height
***note that the triangle is cut from a rectangle, we are not sure if this is an equilateral triangle or isosceles, etc***
Given:
Area of shaded region = area of triangle = 84 sq. in.
height = 1/2s
Unknowns:
base of triangle and unknown side "s"
84 = 1/2bh ----->but h = 1/2s
84 = 1/2b(1/2s)
84 = 1/4b(s) multiply by 4 on both sides
84 x 4 = bs
336 = bs divide both sides by b
s = 336 / b

I assumed shaded region = triangle
