The easiest way is to use long division:
x^3 - 5x^2 + 9x - 9
x^2 - 2 | x^5 - 5x^4 + 7x^3 + x^2 - 8x + 7
x^5 - 2x^3
0 - 5x^4 + 9x^3
- 5x^4 + 10x^2
0 + 9x^3 - 9x^2
+ 9x^3 - 18x
0 - 9x^2 + 10x
- 9x^2 + 18
0 + 10x - 11
check:
(x^2 - 2)(x^3 - 5x^2 + 9x - 9) + (10x - 11)
x^2(x^3 - 5x^2 + 9x - 9)
-2(x^3 - 5x^2 + 9x - 9) + (10x - 11)
x^5 - 5x^4 + 9x^3 - 9x^2
- 2x^3 + 10x^2 - 18x + 18
+ 10x - 11
x^5 - 5x^4 + 7x^3 + x^2 - 8x + 7
