Hi Scott,

 

It looks like they are subtracting the second lower number from the first lower number and adding that difference to the last lower number.  That sum equals the upper number.

 

So in the first example, 11 - 8 = 3 and 3 + 6 = 9

 In the second example, 7 - 14 = -7 and -7 + 10 = 3

 

I'll let you figure out the missing number in the third example.
