-8 means you take away 8 from the hole you are left with a hole which is short of 8 i.e. -8
-21 means you take away 21 more now you are left with a hole short of 29 i.e -29

-8 -21 + 5
-8 means you take away 8 from the hole you are left with a hole which is short of 8 i.e. -8
-21 means you take away 21 more now you are left with a hole short of 29 i.e -29
+5 means putting 5 in the hole now you are left with a hole short of 24 only i.e. -24
