I think the equation is:
y = x2 - 2x - 3
The vertex form is y = a(x-h)2 + k. To convert from the standard form to the vertex form, complete the square:
y + 3 = x2 - 2x
Add 1/2 of the coefficient of the x term (-2x) squared to both sides
y + 3 + (-2/2)2 = x2 - 2x + (-2/2)2
y + 3 + 1 = x2 - 2x + 1
y + 4 = (x-1)2
y = (x-1)2 - 4
