solve 3=(1/3)^2X

I just don't understand this problem...please help and thank you.

3 = (1/3)^2x

3 = (3^-1)^2x             definition of a^-x

3 = 3^-2x                 power rule

1 = -2x                  equal expressions with equal bases have equal exponents

-1/2 = x                divide both sides by -2

1/3 = 3^-1  and 3 = 3¹

 

So, 3¹ = (3^-1)^2x

 

     3¹ = 3^-2x

 

      -2x = 1     x = -1/2
