The map of the Middle East was divided up among the British and French. The new boundaries ignored religious and cultural boundaries, which has led to much of the unrest and turmoil in the region that continues 100 years later. The Middle East was formerly part of the Ottoman Empire prior to WWI. Upon the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the Arab states did not have the economic or military resources to fend of the Western powers Britain and France.
