The length is 2x - 3

 

Area = length x width

 

27 = (2x - 3)(x)

 

27 = 2x² - 3x

 

2x² - 3x - 27 = 0

 

(2x -  9 )(x +  3) = 0

 

Discard the factor (x + 3) because dimensions cannot be negative

 

Solve 2x - 9 = 0

 

2x = 9

 

x = 9/2 = 4.5 m = width

 

length = 2x - 3 = 2 * 4.5 - 3 = 9 - 3 = 6 m
