In Algebra 1 I am given the following problem:

 

Give an example of a non-linear function.

Please help me.

A nonlinear function is any function whose graph is not a straight line.  Examples are f(x) = lxl (graph is a V) or f(x) = x² (graph is a parabola).

Pick any function of x that IS NOT equivalent to the form f(x) = ax + b, where a and b are constants.

 

A few examples:

 

f(x) = x³ - 3

 

f(x) = √x

 

f(x) = sin(3x) - x/5
