The number line and the axes in the Cartesian Coordinate System (often labeled x and y) have a scale with appropriate numbers. For example, numbers from -5 to +5 are appropriate when the values of x are -4, -2, +3, and +4. Tick marks and numbers on the number line (or x-axis) that range from -500 to +500 are not appropriate because it makes it very difficult to clearly see the points plotted.
Now, suppose the x-axis represents the days in October and the y-axis represents the high temperature for that day. An appropriate range of days is 0-31 and appropriate values for y might be 30 °F to 100 °F (appropriate for October but not appropriate for January).
