word problem fun...

Question

if you have 10 white socks, and 6 black socks in a drawer. How many socks must you pull out from the draw (without looking...), to be certain that you have at least one pair of white socks?

Answer 1

If unlucky, you might pull out, in succession, 6 black socks (without replacement) and then it would take two more draws from the drawer (by the drawer person) to finally have two white socks. That's the worst case: 8.

 

If you go by what my teenager wears, any two socks will do, matching or not.
