Quite often, intercepts (where x=0 or where y=0) are easy to find. Otherwise, the expression itself may give hints of easy answers.
y = -|x + 4|
For x=0,
y = -|0+4|
y = -|4|
y = -4
The point (0,-4)
For y = 0,
0 = -|0|
0 = -|-4+4|
0 = -|x+4| [note that this is worked backwards]
so x=-4
The point (-4,0)
Another point,
-2 = -|2|
-2 = -|x+4|
-2 = -|-6+4|
so x=-6
The point (-6,0)
And still another point,
-4 = -|4|
-4 = -|x+4|
-4 + -|-8+4|
so x=-8
The point (-8,-4)
Notice that the graph of y=-|x+4| is a "∧" (an upside-down "V") with the point (the x-intercept, the point where y=0) at (-4,0).
