I cannot figure this out, please help!!!

-3x-13=20

Let's add 13 to both sides...

13-3x-13=30+13

-3x=33

Let's divide both sides by -3...

x=-11

Let's check our work...

-3(x+1)-10=12+8

-3(-11+1)-10=20

-3(-10)-10=20

A negative number multiplied by a negative number has a positive result...

30-10=20

20=20

First get all of the numbers on the right side like this:

 

-3(x+1) = 12+8+10  

 

then simplify

 

-3(x+1) = 30

 

Next you need to divide by -3 to get the x term by itself

 

(x+1) = -10

 

Now just subtract the 1 from both sides to get x by itself

 

x = - 9
