Let x = the number of $8-tickets sold
y = the number of $5-tickets sold
The total number of tickets sold is: x+y
Realize:
the dollars = (dollars per ticket)*(number of tickets sold)
So,
the total dollars for all tickets sold is: 8x + 5y [eq1]
Usually, this type of problem gives a value for (x+y) so that you may solve for either x or y than substitute that value into [eq1] and solve for the other variable.
