Find two numbers that when multiplied give -9, and when added give -8.  The numbers are -9 and 1.  Then the factored expression is
 
[u + (-9)] (u + 1) = (u - 9)(u + 1)
 
Test this by multiplying it out.

If you cannot find the two numbers, then solve the quadratic equation, get two answers r1 and r2, and the factored expression is
