Hi Tiffany, let n represent the number. Then, when we subtract 1 from n, n - 1, and multiply by 3, the result will be equal to n + 11.
3 * (n - 1) = n + 11
3n - 3 = n + 11
Subtract n from both sides:
2n - 3 = 11
Add 3 to both sides:
2n = 14
Divide both sides by 2:
n = 7
The number is 7.
Check
3 * (7 - 1) = 7 + 11
3 * 6 = 18
18 = 18
