             so as John is 3 times as old as Tom, John's age = 3x yrs.

 

3 years ago, 

John was (3x-3) yrs.

Tom was (x-3) yrs

John was 4 times as old as Tom,

3x-3 = 4(x-3)

3x-3=4x-12

x=9

3x=27

 

John is 27 yrs old, Tom is 9 yrs old.
