Number of Parties in Democrates and Republicans

Question

The U.S. Senate has 100 members. After a certain election, there were 12 more Democrates than Republicans, with no other parties represented. How many members of each party were there in the Senate ?

Only one e in Democrats.

 

To solve this problem without Algebra, why don't you start by assuming 50-50, and then make adjustments until the numbers differ by 12.  First step, 51-49; next, 52-48, etc.
