you need to find a value for x that makes the equation true (the left side = the right side)

 

To do this you move the fraction 1/6 from the left side to the right of the equation.  To do this you simply subtract this fraction from both sides.

 

x = 5/6 - 1/6 

x = 4/6

 

which can be reduced to 2/3..

 

check to see if the is the correct answer by substituting it back into the original equation.

 

4/6 + 1/6 = 5/6

Good evening! I can help with this. Basically, you need to get the X alone on one side of the equation. So if you subtract 1/6 from the left side of the equation, you have X+1/6-1/6, which becomes X.

 

What you do to one side of the equation you must do to the other to keep them equal, so you need to subtract 1/6 from the right side as well.

 

5/6-1/6 = 4/6

 

Therefore, X=4/6. You can reduce the fraction as 2 is common to both 4 and 6. You end up with X=2/3.

the problem is saying that a number added to 1/6 is equal to 5/6 of the number.  To solve for the number, you need to subtract 1/6 from both sides,  like this: x + 1/6 - 1/6 = 5/6 x - 1/6  

                                                                                   x = 5/6x -1/6         then you need to subtract 5/6 x from both sides so you can group the x terms together...  x - 5/6x = 5/6x -5/6x -1/6                   or

                                                                              6/6x -5/6x= -1/6      or

                                                                                      1/6 x = -1/6  multiply both sides by 6                                                                                    6(1/6)x = 6 (-1/6)  

final answer is                                                                       x = -1    

check                                                 (-1) + 1/6 = 5/6 ( -1)            or -5/6 = -5/6
