This is a problem of proportion:
For every 7 dollar contribution of Cate , her parents contribute 3 dollars
Now for 203 dollar contribution how much her parents add.
First you should find out how many 7 dollars Cate has contributed that has added up to 203
203÷ 7 = 29
so the parents contribution would be $29 * 3 = $87
I am sure in 3rd and 4th grade, without algebra you have solved problems like this.
Now by algebra we choose a variable X , for the contribution of parents, and write the proportion relation.
7 = 203
3 X
This reads : the ratio of contribution of Cate to her parents' is 7 to 3.
and solve for X.
7x = 203 * 3 = 609
X = 609/7 = 87
