About Mariana

Your children have only one chance for education, and they deserve the best!

Based on my over 15 years of experience as a full-time tutor of children and adults, I can tell that one-on-one tutoring practice gives the best results. I am dedicated, caring and reliable. I love helping others achieve to the best of their abilities, and then - beyond. Because I believe that everybody can better themselves.

Together with the student, we map out the way to achieve our goals, and at this point I take an individual approach with everyone. So far, I've been working with students of ages ranging from 3 to 65, so I know that organizational skills, comprehending, learning speed, and simply habits vary from a person to another person.

I don't promise miracles, I just make them. My students always succeed! No matter if it is a three-year-old (whom I managed to teach to read before his fourth birthday!) or an adult student who did not have any faith that she could pass her pre-employment test, everybody reached their or their parents' goals.

No shows/no calls will be charged for the scheduled time for tutoring or a meeting - if 2 hours were scheduled, 2 hours will be charged. Cancellations less than 36 hours before the lesson will be charged for the scheduled time of tutoring - fee depends on the subject: $50 to $70 per hour.

My native tongue is Bulgarian. I use Russian, Macedonian, Serbian, and Croatian on different levels, and this helps me teach people of different origins and cultures.

I am also an interpreter/translator. As a former nurse, I mainly interpret at hospitals. My working experience started as a registered nurse in the surgery ward of St. Anna Hospital (Varna, Bulgaria), after I graduated from the Medical College in the same city (1989). As a RN I provided perioperative care outside of the sterile field, which included caring for patients prior to surgery and during recovery after surgery. Later I earned a Master of Science degree in Ecology (with additional major in Journalism) - from the Technical University Varna (1998).

In 2011-2012 school year I taught Life Science (Biology) in middle schools in Indianapolis, IN, as a student-teacher in the Teaching Program at the University of Indianapolis, and as a laureate of the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

I've tutored Bulgarian to Peace Corps individuals (2010-2012). I have also been tutoring Bulgarian to others interested in the language. While in Bulgaria, I translated a biography written by an English journalist (2004). I had been tutoring English for ten years to Bulgarian native speakers (both children and adults, 1995-2005) before moving to the States in January 2006. Here I mainly tutor English to Americans, but also to people from many different countries.

- Theresa, Indianapolis, IN on 4/22/13
Mariana replied on 4/22/2013

Yes, I can't agree more - confidence is a huge factor. My core belief is that everything matters when it is about a child. The earlier the academical struggles of a child are taken care of, the better. Your step-daughter is such a wonderful young lady, intelligent and vibrant. I could instantly tell that she would do remarkably better when she starts trusting herself more. And I will do my best to speed up this process! Thank you, Theresa, for the wonderful words! Parents’ support is highly appreciated by teachers. Thank you.

"Patient and Knowledgeable"

"Truly The Best"

- David, Indianapolis, IN on 3/8/13

"Great all-around tutor!"

- Dave, Greenwood, IN on 2/15/13
Mariana replied on 4/5/2013

That is true, David - unfortunately grades don’t always present students’ intellectual level correctly. Since the first tutoring session, I could tell that your son is smart, wonderfully up-brought and an interesting interlocutor. He enjoys seeing things from a different prospective and appreciates new approaches. That’s why working with him is so rewarding.

I know that there will be many, many occasions in which he will continue making us all proud. Thanks again for the support! Parents’ attitude makes a big difference.

"Great tutor"

- Arthur, Indianapolis, IN on 12/7/12

- Neitra, Indianapolis, IN on 11/3/12
Mariana replied on 11/5/2012

Thank you so very much for these kind words, Neitra!
Your son is well behaved and easy to work with. I believe that his lack of motivation was the only thing that prevented him from performing to the best of his abilities. I'm so glad that my methods broke through to him.
He is intelligent and I have faith that he can succeed in everything he puts his mind into. I am honored to be a part of the process.

"Great tutor"

- Lei, Indianapolis, IN on 9/16/12
Mariana replied on 9/17/2012

When the student's mother tongue is so different from English, and it even doesn't have some sounds that the English language has, the efforts required are tremendous and this is exactly what you put forward, Lei. Your motivation and perseverance are remarkable and the work you did - huge! That's why the progress in your pronunciation was so big. I enjoyed teaching you and learning about your culture and language, and country was very, very enriching for me.

"English teaching"

- Philip, Bloomington, IN on 8/27/12
Mariana replied on 9/3/2012

Thank you, Mr. W.! Teaching your son is a true pleasure! He amazes me every time because he is a very fast learner. Every teacher would agree that a motivated student is a blessing, and your child is self-motivated and success-driven. I just do my best to keep him on his toes, and to help him perform to the best of his abilities.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I assess the students’ level of knowledge and plan accordingly to their needs. Knowing their areas of strengths and weaknesses allows me to help the most.

I model how to look for the answer that makes the statement appropriate for standard written English, and is worded most consistently with the style and tone of the passage. I provide a plethora of exercises for my student, so he or she becomes proficient. There are special test taking techniques that I help the learners develop. I use lots of materials that have been proven to work over the years, and I also stay updated on the latest available tools.

I am known for paying particular attention to details. Perfectionism is more my personal goal than my students’ expectations. At the same time, you may be surprised how fun working on grammar and vocabulary can be! My name is a great name to know when preparing for reading and writing tests.

ACT Reading

I assess the students’ level of knowledge and plan accordingly to their needs. Knowing their areas of strengths and weaknesses allows me to help the most.

I demonstrate how to critically read and analyze the passage we are working on, how to find what can be reasonably inferred from it and how to choose the best answer if more than one satisfies the question at hand. I provide a plethora of exercises for my student, so he or she becomes proficient. There are special test taking techniques that I help the learners develop. I use lots of materials that have been proven to work over the years, and I also stay updated on the latest available tools.

ADD/ADHD

I've had students with ADD/ADHD and I know they require special attention and patience. I truly believe that everybody can succeed, and I am known for holding high expectations for all my students. I am dedicated to what I do and never lose faith.

Algebra 1

Algebra may intimidate both adolescents and adults; many may struggle to a point of feeling like closing down to math in general. I have seen the need to rebuild/reshape, restructure and assist in creating successful long-term learners with efficacy and solid retention of skill sets. I have also seen people who profoundly changed their view towards math after being tutored by me.

Bulgarian

Bulgarian is my native language. I am a published poet, and I also have a master’s degree in journalism. I have worked for Varna Express newspaper and for the nationwide Radio Varna.

I have been teaching Bulgarian to peace corps individuals since 2010. I also tutor adults in Indianapolis who are interested in the Bulgarian language because they have been dancing Bulgarian Folk dances for decades and want to understand the lyrics of the songs they love to perform. Some of them even visited Bulgaria for their honeymoon, and it is so touching for me to help them share their memories about it in Bulgarian.

I’d love to teach Bulgarian to you. Every language gives us a bit more different perception and expands our horizons. There is a saying that I write on the first page of each new language student: "One lives as many lives as many languages one speaks."

Dyslexia

In my practice I have worked with both children and adults who have dyslexia. My experience has helped me develop techniques and tools that assist dyslexic students in the way they process written information. I use materials based on Orton Gillingham principles, and I apply multisensory activities in my lessons. I plan individually because every student has a different learning style. I focus on working with syllables and morphemes.
I have the faith that everybody can learn and I am known for my genuine motivational feedback that empowers my students. I know that each and every one of my students can enjoy the freedom and power that literacy gives, and I do my best to help them become literate.

Elementary (K-6th)

I can help students in K-6th grade who struggle academically. I have been full-time tutoring for over 14 years and have volunteered in K-6 schools for 5 years (one full day a week). I can assist kids in every subject, so they can improve their grades, their study skills and also their self-organizational habits.

This school level is the foundation for children's success and very often determines their self-confidence for many years to come. I am known for holding high expectations for all my students and for being very patient.

I have the strong faith that with individual approach and the right teaching techniques every child can succeed!

Elementary Math

Math won't allow any gaps in children's knowledge. Students need to know the material for their grade level in order to be able to proceed to the higher one. That's why I pay special attention to the individual details and make sure that kids have mastered what we've been working on. It boosts their self-confidence and makes them eager to move on to new challenges. Children see that learning math can be fun!
I know that students’ attitude towards math at this school level is extremely important to their academical future and I always go the extra mile to build up the necessary positive viewpoint.

English

For over 15 years I have been tutoring English. I work with K-12 students, college students, and with adults. I am patient, creative, and productive. In my career I have been tutoring both native speakers and foreigners. I enjoy helping people learn this beautiful language and master using it to their full potential. No matter if it is a little child learning to read, or a college student needing assistance with an assignment, I find the right approach, so our work together is prolific.

ESL/ESOL

In my practice of over 15 years, I have been working with many ESL students - both children and adults. I have been tutoring English to people from many different countries: China, Indonesia, India, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Greece, Brazil, Argentina, Panama, Nicaragua ...

I have helped them with reading, writing and speaking, so kids can have better grades at school and adults can find better jobs. They all passed the tests I prepared them for from the first time, including TOEFL test. They also became more self-confident in their daily lives.

I apply educational techniques that are designated specifically for ESL learners and help them become successful. Being a native Bulgarian speaker, I personally know the challenges on the way of learning a foreign language. I speak several languages and it helps me work with people of different cultures and all walks of life.

GED

I applaud everybody who is willing to redirect his/her life!

I support my students to have a bright future by empowering them to be independent, successful long-term learners and take control of their future pool of choices rather than be limited, stuck, and unfulfilled in careers because they have low self-esteem. Knowledge is power, and I absolutely love helping my students earn it!

Handwriting

In my career of over 14 years I have helped many students learn handwriting. No matter if it is a three-year old who is learning to write his first loops and lines, or an adult who is an ESL learner, I patiently explain, model and help everybody. Writing and reading go hand in hand and I have opened a literacy window in the lives of many. The first student I taught how to read and write was 7 year-old … when I was 9 year-old.

Phonics

The phonics teaching method enhances the ability to hear, distinguish, and operate with phonemes (the basic units of a language’s phenology). It assists the reader in sounding out written words and realizing how the sounds blend together in spelling patterns. In my work I use this method to help the student develop phonemic awareness of the special English phonemes. The fact that the letter names and the letter sounds are different in English makes reading challenging for both children and adults – far not only for ESL students. I have worked with elementary school students who are native English speakers, but struggle with reading, and if they don’t get help on time, later we see high school students who have troubles comprehending the material they read.

Photography

Photography means "to write with light". I've always been fascinated by this art, and I took a photography class while I was in high school. Later, as a part of my additional major in Journalism, I took a Photo-Journalism class at the Technical University Varna.

Praxis

I passed all parts of the PRAXIS required for teachers from the first time and can prepare you even for the test atmosphere based on my personal experience.

During my extensive experience as an English tutor, I've prepared many children and adults for tests in versatile fields. I can prepare students for PRAXIS Reading, Writing and Math.

I am known for paying particular attention to details. Perfectionism is more my personal goal than my students’ expectations. At the same time, you may be surprised how fun working on grammar and vocabulary can be! My name is a great name to know when preparing for reading and writing tests.

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the fundamental part of math that lays the basis for a strong understanding of the next academical level. It is a very delicate moment when children take their first steps into more in-depth math, and this time must be used wisely in order to insure success.

I have been supporting students through their mathematical journeys for over 14 years and have brought forth tremendous growth in both skills and attitude.

Proofreading

I specialize in reading and writing test preparation, and also editing and proofreading papers. It doesn't matter if it is LA homework of a 3rd grader, a college assignment, or a research project, I apply the same dedication and perfectionism that are typical for me. I will help you refine your writing, so you feel confident that minor errors won’t be in the way of your success.

My extensive educational background and professional experience produce successful students. I have a Master’s degree in Journalism and am a published author. I am also the author of a stipend winning essay (in 2009).

Reading

Reading opens doors that bring us into new worlds. Regardless if it is a little child or an adult student, I help them learn to read with comprehension and intrigue them in reading, so they become lifetime readers.

When tutoring reading with comprehension, I practice with my students to find the essence of each paragraph and then help them summarize the whole information we can get from the page/chapter. This way they learn how to study and it helps them become more successful in school; it also makes them understand and appreciate books better.

My youngest student learned to read before his 4th birthday, and my own daughter could read and write by the age of five.

I have opened a literacy window in the lives of many. The first student I taught how to read was 7 year-old … when I was 9 year-old.

Russian

Russian is not my native language, but is a language that I was raised with. I learned Russian in school – from 3rd grade to 12th grade. We studied Russian grammar, and Russian literature, our teachers were native Russian speakers. For many years during my elementary, middle and high school age I had been in a written correspondence with friends from Russia. There were Russian people in our neighborhood. I have also been watching movies, have read books and have listened to songs in Russian all throughout my life, and have a very deep understanding of the culture, and the "big Russian soul", as we say. As a hospital interpreter in Indianapolis, I have interpreted in Russian. I really love this language and tutoring it is very rewarding for me.

SAT Reading

I am known for paying particular attention to details. Perfectionism is more my personal goal than my students’ expectations. At the same time, you may be surprised how fun working on grammar and vocabulary can be! My name is a great name to know when preparing for reading and writing tests. I will model for you how to critically read the text, how to find what can be reasonably inferred from it and how to choose the correct answer. I always provide a plethora of practice, so you will become proficient. There are special test taking techniques that I will you help develop.
Your SAT/ACT/GED tests scores WILL improve with my tutoring! All of my students have been successful!

SAT Writing

I start by assessing the students’ level of knowledge; then I plan accordingly to their needs - I meet everybody at his/her level.

In the beginning I model for my students how to critically read the writing prompt and how to brainstorm ideas in order to create a clear thesis and to be able to support it, producing a strong persuasive essay.

I teach writing strategies, essay structure, grammar, punctuation, organization of the sentences, word choice, consideration of the audience, usage of reasons and examples, etc.
Your SAT/ACT/GED tests scores WILL improve with my tutoring. You will become more self-confident when expressing yourself in writing which is a great skill not only when taking tests, but in life in general.

Study Skills

Study skills are as important as knowledge. In my practice I always coach on daily routines, too, since learning is a process, not an occurrence. Together with the student we map out the way to achieve our goals, and at this point I take an individual approach with everyone. So far, I've been working with students of ages ranging from 3 to 65, so I know that organizational skills, comprehending, learning speed, and simply habits vary from a person to another person. I don't promise miracles, I just make them. My students always succeed!

TOEFL

For over 15 years, I have been working with many ESL students. I have been tutoring English to people from many different countries including: China, Indonesia, India, Haiti, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Greece, Brazil, Argentina, etc.

I have helped them with reading, writing and speaking. I have worked with people with different professions (doctors, lawyers, nurses, etc...) who had built their careers in their countries and needed to pass the TOEFL test in order to do the same here. They also became more self-confident in their daily lives.

I apply educational techniques that are designated specifically for ESL learners and help them become successful. I speak several languages and it helps me work with people of different cultures and all walks of life.

Writing

My extensive educational background and professional experience produce successful students. I have a Master’s degree in Journalism and am a published author. I am also the author of a stipend winning essay (in 2009).

I have taught students the ISTEP writing requirements. I help my students develop a way with words. Your writing skills WILL improve with my help. Being able to express feelings and opinions in writing is an important skill in all prospects of life, and especially if you are preparing for a test.
